Serving the
Denton, TX community, our highly patient-oriented practice is committed to providing honest dentistry and exceptional surgical care. If you have lost a tooth or experienced jawbone deterioration, you might have been told you do not have enough bone left to support a dental implant. Because our doctor holds a specialized fellowship in dental implants, we are expertly equipped to rebuild that lost foundation through gentle, precise bone grafting right here in our office.

Why Bone Grafting Is Needed

Your jawbone requires constant stimulation from the roots of your teeth to stay healthy and dense. When a tooth is extracted or lost to severe gum disease, the body immediately begins to resorb (absorb) the bone in that empty space because it is no longer being used. Over time, this causes the jaw to shrink and weaken. Bone grafting is a highly effective surgical procedure that adds volume and density back to these deteriorated areas, creating the solid, stable foundation necessary to support a dental implant or a securely fitting bridge.

Preparing For Future Treatment

Rebuilding bone is a vital step in preparing for permanent tooth replacement. We rely on our advanced technology to ensure your procedure is incredibly precise.

Using our 3D CBCT scanner, we capture a complete, 360-degree digital map of your jawbone density and nerve pathways. This allows our doctor to see exactly where the bone has thinned and determine precisely how much grafting material is needed. Often, we perform a specific type of graft called “socket preservation” immediately after pulling a tooth; placing grafting material directly into the empty socket prevents the bone from shrinking while it heals, perfectly setting the stage for a future implant.

Types Of Bone Grafts

Every smile is unique, and we tailor our materials to your specific clinical needs and personal preferences. The most common types of highly sterilized, biocompatible grafting materials we use include:

  • Allograft: Bone material sourced from a certified human tissue bank. This is the most common and minimally invasive option, as it does not require a second surgical site on your body.
  • Xenograft: Highly purified bone minerals sourced from an animal (typically bovine). This acts as a powerful, long-lasting scaffold for your own bone to grow into.
  • Alloplast: A completely synthetic, lab-created material (often made from calcium phosphate) that safely stimulates natural bone growth.
  • Autograft: Bone harvested from another area of your own jaw.

The Bone Grafting Process

Guided by our warm and comforting approach, we go above and beyond to ensure your surgical experience is entirely stress-free.

1. Absolute Comfort

We will thoroughly numb the surgical area with a local anesthetic. You will feel zero pain during the procedure. We also offer safe nitrous oxide (laughing gas) if you need help deeply relaxing.

2. Graft Placement

The doctor gently opens the gum tissue to access the weakened jawbone. The selected grafting material is meticulously packed into the deteriorated area to build up the necessary volume.

3. Protection & Suturing

The graft is often covered with a small, specialized membrane to protect it and prevent gum tissue from growing into the space. We then carefully suture the gums closed to begin the healing process.

Healing & Recovery

Following your procedure, it is normal to experience some mild swelling and tenderness around the surgical site for a few days. Keeping your head elevated and applying an ice pack to your jaw will greatly reduce this inflammation. You will need to stick to a soft-food diet for the first week to avoid putting any pressure on the healing gums. While the soft tissue heals in just a week or two, the true work happens beneath the surface. Over the next three to six months, your body will naturally replace the grafting material with your own healthy, dense bone.

Long-Term Benefits

Investing in a bone graft provides profound, lifelong benefits for your oral health. By restoring the lost bone, we prevent the sunken, aged facial appearance that often accompanies severe tooth loss. Most importantly, grafting provides the rock-solid structural support required to successfully anchor a permanent dental implant, allowing you to regain the massive chewing power needed to eat your favorite foods with absolute confidence.

Caring For The Surgical Site

Protecting the graft during the initial healing phase is critical for success. You must avoid creating any suction in your mouth—meaning absolutely no drinking through straws and no smoking, as this can disrupt the healing tissue and lead to failure. We will instruct you not to brush directly over the surgical site for the first few days. Instead, you will gently swish with warm salt water or a prescribed antibacterial rinse to keep the area clean and free of infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. We are deeply committed to painless care. We use highly effective local anesthetics so you will not feel any pain during the procedure itself. As the numbness wears off, you will experience some minor soreness and swelling, but this is typically easily managed with standard over-the-counter pain medication.

Because your body needs time to naturally grow new blood vessels and turn the grafting material into solid bone, the waiting period is typically between three and six months. We will take follow-up digital x-rays to confirm the bone is perfectly dense before scheduling your implant placement.

True rejection is incredibly rare because the grafting materials we use are completely sterilized and stripped of all living cellular material, leaving behind only the pure mineral structure. Your body simply uses this sterile structure as a scaffold to grow its own new bone.
