What Is A Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any sudden issue involving your teeth, gums, or jaw that requires immediate professional intervention to stop severe bleeding, alleviate excruciating pain, or save a damaged tooth. While a minor chip or a dull, intermittent ache can usually wait for a scheduled appointment, active infections and physical traumas require urgent care to prevent the problem from rapidly worsening and threatening your overall health.
Common Dental Emergencies
We are fully equipped to handle a wide range of urgent dental issues. You should contact our office immediately if you experience:
- Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth: A permanent tooth completely dislodged from its socket due to physical impact.
- Severe toothache: Intense, throbbing, or unyielding pain that prevents you from sleeping or functioning, often indicating an infection deep within the tooth root.
- Dental abscess: A painful, pimple-like swelling on the gums, often accompanied by a fever or a foul taste in the mouth, signaling a dangerous bacterial infection.
- Broken or fractured tooth: A severe break that exposes the sensitive inner pulp, causing extreme pain when breathing or drinking.
- Sudden jaw locking: Because our doctor specializes in orofacial pain, we urgently treat TMJ emergencies where the jaw suddenly becomes painfully locked open or closed.
When To Seek Immediate Care
Time is often the most critical factor in a dental emergency, particularly when trying to save a knocked-out tooth or stopping an aggressive infection. If you are in severe pain, do not wait to see if it gets better on its own.
- Important note: If your dental emergency is accompanied by uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty swallowing, or severe facial swelling that compromises your airway or reaches your eye, you should bypass the dental office and go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
What To Do Before Your Appointment
When a dental emergency strikes, staying calm and taking the correct immediate actions can significantly improve the chances of saving your tooth.
1. Call Our Office
Contact us immediately so we can prepare for your arrival. We always strive to accommodate emergency walk-ins and urgent appointments on the same day.
2. Preserve The Tooth Or Crown
If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface), NEVER the root. Gently rinse it with water without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket, or store it in a small container of cold milk to keep the root cells alive while you travel to us.
3. Manage Swelling & Bleeding
Bite down firmly but gently on a piece of clean gauze to control any bleeding. Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your cheek to minimize facial swelling and numb the area temporarily.
Fast Relief When You Need It Most
When you arrive at our clinic in pain, your comfort is our absolute priority. We will immediately bring you into a treatment room and utilize our advanced technology, such as low-radiation 3D CBCT scans, to instantly identify the source of the problem beneath the gumline. To get you out of pain right away, we will administer highly effective local anesthetics. If the trauma has left you feeling panicked, we proudly offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you deeply and safely relax while we resolve the emergency.
Preventing Future Emergencies
While accidents happen, many dental emergencies are entirely preventable. Wearing a custom-fitted athletic mouthguard during contact sports is the best way to protect your teeth from physical trauma. For those prone to chipping teeth in their sleep, a custom nightguard prevents the extreme forces of bruxism from fracturing your enamel. Most importantly, maintaining your routine six-month check-ups allows us to spot and treat minor decay before it suddenly erupts into a painful, infected emergency.
Aftercare & Recovery
We treat our patients like family, which means we do not just get you out of pain and send you on your way. Once the immediate emergency is stabilized—whether by prescribing antibiotics for an abscess or performing an urgent root canal—we will seamlessly schedule any necessary follow-up care. Whether you need a permanent porcelain crown to restore a broken tooth or a dental implant to replace a lost one, we will completely rebuild your smile and monitor your recovery every step of the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
While an emergency room can prescribe antibiotics or pain medication to temporarily manage your symptoms, most hospitals do not have a dentist. They cannot perform root canals, extract teeth, or repair dental work. To actually fix the root cause of a dental emergency, you need to see a qualified dentist.
It depends on the severity. If the chip is small, painless, and not sharp, it can usually wait a few days for a normal appointment. However, if the fracture is large, causes sharp pain when breathing, or leaves a jagged edge cutting your tongue, you should call us for urgent care.
You can take over-the-counter pain relievers (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) exactly as directed on the packaging to help manage the discomfort. You can also apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Never apply aspirin or any painkiller directly against the gums, as this will cause severe chemical burns to the tissue.
